Our beginner 0-10km program is run twice a year ( March and September) and is led by experienced runners / walkers from the club.
We have weekly training sessions on a Tuesday/Thursday evening at 6pm (5:45pm in winter) and 6am (6:30am in winter) on a Saturday morning.
You can walk as fast or slow as you wish. No matter whether you’re a race or fitness walker, walking fast uses your arms vigorously, giving you a full body work-out.
Our vision at Spartan Harriers is to be able to make our grass roots junior program accessible to aspiring athletes from all communities and social, economic backgrounds.
Spartan Harriers was formed on the 26th April 1901. On that date a general meeting took place at the Cumberland Hotel St Georges Street for the purposes of forming a club whose object would be “to foster cross-country running and promote athletics in general”. In 1903, Spartan Harriers organised its first 50 mile big walk with 61 competitors starting at Greenmarket square. Future rugby Springbok Mr WA Millar won in a time of 9:23:29 pulling away from JW Lewis at Salt River after reportedly drinking Champagne!
1907 saw Spartan’s introduce the Marathon to South Africa and 1926 formed the Ladies Section. 1975 was a historic year for the Two Oceans Marathon. Ulla Paul from Spartan Harriers, the only female entry, entered the record books as the first women’s champion. Her (winning) time was 05:14:51. The club has gone on to set many achievements since then.
The club settled down in Meadowridge in 1993 after building its own club house. 2001 saw the club celebrate its Centenary and in 2003, the Centenary of its oldest event, the Big Walk. Today the club welcomes all kinds of walkers and runners from beginners to experienced athletes.
