I joined Spartan Harriers Beginners in September 2015; one of the best decisions I have made. I remember back then, entering races and watching other clubs running together and always had this silent hope that Spartans could do this. Back then, it seemed that everyone was on their own mission and that you needed to find your own space. Needless to say, I latched on to an amazing group of ladies who have helped me, inspired me, reprimanded me and befriended me.
But, my experience this last few weeks were nothing short of phenomenal. I hooked up with the Peninsula group under the guidance of Giscard and Rudy…. And WOW… they have completely renewed and rejuvenated my absolute love of running. For the first time as a member of Spartans, I have found my space. Giscard and Rudy have shown what it means to GIVE of yourself. They have sacrificed their time as well as their own achievements to coach a team of us to achieve our set goals. They were not the easiest of coaches, especially Rudy, who I sometimes felt that I could injure, but their determination to get us to be better than we were before was first and foremost. I have never been prouder to be a Spartan that I was running on this bus Sunday. We followed our leaders with guts and determination, much to the delight of many other club runners who hopped on and off our bus. The positive comments on the side of the road were encouraging as we portrayed this amazing display of team spirit.
Giscard and Rudy have now adopted(willing or unwilling) a group of runners who will continue to latch on to their leadership and guidance going forward. My lesson from these last few weeks was STRIVE TO BE BETTER THAN YOU WERE YESTERDAY. I am not the fastest runner, but I am a runner and am immensely blessed to have crossed paths with two people who have impacted my life in such a huge manner. I know for sure that I speak on behalf of our entire Peninsula Group.
